One of the Largest Canada Goose Collections in the World
In the mid-2000s, The WFVZ Bird Museum and Research Center received a large collection of Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) study skins from Dr. Bertin W. Anderson. Dr. Anderson, a research biologist, studies various topics ranging from the effects of restoration on the land and the wildlife to the taxonomy of birds. These study skins, collected from across the United States and Canada, were used for Dr. Anderson’s research for his book, Evolution and Taxonomy of White-cheeked Geese (2010), as well as other research projects. Through his research, Dr. Anderson recognized numerous Canada Goose species and subspecies by studying their physical morphology.
After Executive Director, Dr. Linnea Hall, and Collections Manager, Mr. René Corado, visited Dr. Anderson and his impressive collection in Blyth, California, Dr. Anderson contacted Dr. Hall and Mr. Corado to ask if his collection could be housed at the WFVZ for safekeeping. Knowing the WFVZ was the perfect place to keep such a large and important collection, it was agreed that the WFVZ would acquire Dr. Anderson’s Canada Goose skins.
Today, at over 1,400 study skins, the WFVZ owns one of the largest Canada Goose collections in the world!
